Career Information - e-Commerce

E-commerce is a word bandied around all the time, but what does it really mean? Short for electronic commerce, e-commerce basically means any business or transactions that take place online. Shopping, banking, investing, and financial planning all fall under this broad category.

Better business, better prices

E-commerce has vastly reduced the costs of doing business both for companies and consumers. As a company owner, you have fewer expenses if your business is primarily online. You don't necessarily have to pay rent, electricity, or a large staff. In addition, the range of potential buyers goes up if you put your business online. Working from your home in San Diego, you can sell items to buyers in New Delhi.

On the consumer side, the advantages are just as enticing. You can shop for hours without spending money on transportation and gas. You can do comparison shopping; not just in your neighborhood, but around the whole world. And because businesses save money if they go online, this sometimes translates to better prices for you, the consumer.

E-commerce careers

There are numerous career options if you're interested in e-commerce. In addition to starting your own business, you can also work in Web design, search engine optimization, and advertising. Not surprisingly, all of these occupations can be conducted entirely online as well. It's not unusual for a Web designer and an e-business operator to never meet face to face.

Job outlook and salary

In most cases, Web designers, search engine optimization specialists and e-business owners work for themselves. Thus, your salary really depends on how well you conduct business. But if the past 15 years of Internet history are any indication, it seems that even moderate skills or a pretty good business idea can bring you a fairly comfortable income. And because you can work from anywhere, your standard of living can be extremely high in some cases.
